Pocket PC Advice and Tips

Pocket PC Information

This is a collection of useful information that I've found out about using my Pocket PC. I've put links to useful software as well as some problems I had and how I resolved them. All the information relates directly to the Orange SPV M1000, but since this is the same unit as the O2 XDA2 and the iMate, it's probably safe to try the same solutions if you have one of those other products. A lot of things mentioned relate to any Pocket PC.

Warning: Any information given below is based on my personal experience. If you try any of these things yourself, you do so at your own risk. Always back up your PDA / Pocket PC regularly. In particular, backup your PDA before you make any major configuration changes, or if you decide to do a "tidy up" of files.

Q

I've installed NetFront, but can't get access to the Orange World Homepage (http://orange.multimedia/)

Does NetFront support WAP, including access to the service provider's homepage?

A

This is the best browser for Pocket PC. I have the Orange SPV M1000 (which is the same as the O2 XDA2). It works great!

The designers of this product have done an excellent job.

If you are having problems getting access to your network provider's home page, it's probably because they have programmed the site to look for the Pocket IE browser. So all you need to do is go into the Misc settings and add another UserAgent that pretends to be Pocket IE. I called my new agent Pocket IE and used the following details: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) The rest you can leave at defaults. So now as far as the Orange World web site is concerned, they think I'm still running Pocket IE and serve up the correct page.

I am very pleased with this product!

Q

How can I convert files from Pocket Excel, XLP into full Excel, XLS format?

A

There are two simple ways I know how to do this:

1. Use the built-in conversion tool in the Microsoft Active Sync software. This will normally convert the file as you copy it from your PDA to your PC.

2. I you are copying files directly from an SD card, then Active Sync won't kick in, because it is triggered by the actual connection of the PDA via USB (or Bluetooth etc.). Instead, simply use the "save as..." feature within Pocket Excel on your PDA. Pocket Excel can save files directly in XLS format. Remember, that even if files are saved in that format, they still won't have all the extra features you get in the full version of Excel, so you still need to limit you spreadsheet to functions that are available in Pocket Excel.

Q

How can I manage buildings and contractors Using a PDA?

A

Check out this web site the FMCompany. They offer web based building and facilities management that lets you manage faults and maintenance from your PDA.

Q

My Pocket PC sometimes doesn't synchronise with my desktop PC. Is there a solution?

A

I've tried all sorts of things here, but it just seems to be a bit random. The only solution appears to be to do a soft reset on the unit fairly regularly. At least once per week sometimes several times per week. Not really a solution, but it's just buggy software. Hopefully it's better in Windows Mobile 5.
